A new study published in Nature Food in 2026 has examined China’s plant-based food supply and its ability to meet nutritional needs. The research, led by Li et al., highlights gaps in key nutrients despite the country’s push toward plant-forward diets.
The study combined supply data with assessments of dietary habits, creating a detailed picture of nutrient availability. It found that iron, zinc, vitamin B12, and certain essential amino acids are often lacking in China’s plant-based foods. These deficiencies could worsen if climate change continues to disrupt crop yields and nutrient levels.
Biofortification—enriching staple crops with micronutrients—was identified as a promising solution. Precision agriculture and advanced food processing could also improve nutrient profiles and absorption. Legumes and specific cereals, already rich in protein and micronutrients, were noted as vital for balanced diets. To address these challenges, the researchers called for multisectoral collaboration. They proposed platforms where policymakers, farmers, and scientists co-design strategies that include climate adaptation. Urban and peri-urban farming was also suggested as a way to diversify food sources and reduce seasonal shortages. The findings offer lessons for other countries transitioning to plant-based diets. Without adaptive measures, nutrient gaps could persist or widen, affecting public health.
China’s experience shows that plant-based diets must be carefully managed to avoid micronutrient shortages.
