Early research during the pandemic found that patients with low vitamin D levels often faced worse COVID-19 outcomes. A 2022 review noted that higher levels were associated with shorter hospital stays and lower death rates. Another 2023 study suggested that supplementation might help reduce severity, particularly in people already deficient.

Vitamin D is naturally produced when skin is exposed to sunlight. It can also be found in foods like oily fish, eggs, and fortified products, or taken as supplements. However, certain groups—such as older adults, those with darker skin, and people who spend little time outdoors—are more likely to have low levels. While some studies propose benefits for COVID-19 recovery, experts warn against excessive intake. High doses (50,000 to 100,000 IU) were tested in some cases, but too much vitamin D can lead to health risks. Currently, there is not enough strong evidence to recommend it specifically for preventing or treating the virus.

The potential connection between vitamin D and COVID-19 remains under investigation.
