Eli Lilly's Retatrutide Shows Strong Diabetes Results Amid Stock Decline

Eli Lilly's experimental drug retatrutide has shown promising results in reducing blood sugar levels for type 2 diabetes patients. Over 40 weeks, the treatment lowered HbA1c by 1.7 to 2.0 percentage points, though slightly less effectively than the company's existing drug, Mounjaro. Meanwhile, the firm faces growing market scrutiny as its stock declines and analysts adjust expectations for its weight-loss and diabetes portfolio.

In clinical trials, retatrutide demonstrated significant benefits for diabetes management. Patients on the highest 12 mg dose lost an average of 16.8 kilograms while achieving notable HbA1c reductions. These results, though slightly behind those of Mounjaro (tirzepatide), still mark a strong performance in glucose control.

More data on retatrutide will emerge later this year, with seven Phase 3 trials set to report findings. These studies will cover obesity, sleep apnoea, and cardiovascular outcomes, expanding the drug's potential applications. Full results are scheduled for presentation in June 2026 at the American Diabetes Association's conference. Despite the progress, Eli Lilly's stock has dropped around 15 percent since January, lagging behind the broader S&P 500. Analysts at HSBC downgraded the company to 'Reduce' on March 17, cutting the price target from $1,070 to $850. They cited concerns over pricing pressure in the weight-loss drug market, which could reach $80 to $120 billion by 2032. The FDA's decision on Lilly's oral GLP-1 candidate, orforglipron, is due on April 10, 2026. The company remains optimistic, forecasting 2026 revenues of $80 to $83 billion—a 25 percent jump from the previous year.

Retatrutide's trial results highlight its potential in diabetes and weight management, though further data will clarify its long-term role. With upcoming regulatory decisions and expanding research, Lilly's pipeline remains active despite recent stock challenges. The company's revenue growth projections suggest confidence in its broader drug portfolio.
