A new study highlights the importance of resting heart rate in assessing stroke risk. While most people know a high pulse can signal danger, very low rates may also pose serious threats. Researchers found that both extremes—below 50 bpm and at or above 90 bpm—were linked to higher chances of stroke. A normal resting heart rate typically falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). The study revealed that individuals with rates between 60 and 69 bpm faced the lowest stroke risk. However, those with very low rates—below 50 bpm—saw a 25% increased likelihood of stroke.

Very low heart rates, known as bradycardia, can reduce blood flow to the brain. This reduction raises the risk of ischemic strokes, where a clot blocks blood supply. At the other end, very high resting rates were tied to both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. The dangers of a fast pulse extended beyond strokes. People with rates at or above 90 bpm had a 45% higher stroke risk. They also faced greater chances of heart attacks and premature death.

The findings suggest resting heart rate is a simple yet overlooked tool for cardiovascular risk assessment. Both very low and very high rates signal potential dangers. Monitoring this basic measure could help identify individuals at greater risk of stroke and related conditions.
