Flood Warning for Bode and Ilse - Flood warnings issued as thaw and rain swell Harz Mountain rivers

Warmer weather is arriving after weeks of freezing conditions in the Harz Mountains and surrounding regions. Authorities have now issued flood warnings as rising temperatures and potential rain threaten to push river levels higher along the Bode and Ilse rivers.

The German Weather Service predicts temperatures could reach up to 13°C (55°F) in the coming days. Even higher elevations are unlikely to drop below freezing, marking a sharp shift from recent cold spells. This thaw is already causing snow to melt, feeding into rivers that have remained frozen for weeks.

Rain is expected to spread across the area on Sunday, with lighter showers continuing into Monday and Tuesday. The combination of melting snow and rainfall has prompted the Saxony-Anhalt Flood Forecasting Center to issue flood warnings. Some gauging stations, particularly in the upper reaches of the Ilse and Bode rivers and their tributaries, may surpass the first flood alert level.

The Bode river, which begins in the Harz Mountains and flows through the Magdeburger Börde region, is already showing signs of rising water. The flood warning will stay in effect until at least next Tuesday, as conditions remain unstable.

Residents along the Bode and Ilse rivers are advised to stay alert as water levels climb. The thaw and incoming rain could lead to noticeable flooding in vulnerable areas. Authorities will continue monitoring the situation until the flood warning is lifted.
