Freshpet Names Top Veterinary Nutritionist as Research Chief to Boost Pet Food Science

Freshpet has appointed Dr. Lisa Weeth, a leading veterinary nutritionist, as its new head of veterinary research and communications. The move strengthens the company's commitment to scientific research on fresh pet food. Dr. Weeth brings over two decades of specialised experience in clinical nutrition for dogs and cats to the role.

Dr. Weeth has worked with Freshpet for more than 15 years as a nutrition consultant. Her expertise has shaped recipe nutrient profiles and guided best practices in clinical nutrition. Now, she will lead the company's research and development efforts full-time.

As one of fewer than 90 board-certified veterinary nutritionists in the U.S., Dr. Weeth will oversee scientific communication with veterinarians. She will also direct research collaborations to study how fresh pet food affects animal health. Her work includes analysing the impact of diet on vitality, coat health, and overall well-being. Freshpet has already published or initiated around 15 scientific studies since its founding in 2006. These include partnerships with institutions like Tufts University, such as a 2018 study on nutrient digestibility in dogs. Dr. Gerardo Pérez-Camargo, Freshpet's DVM and Ph.D. leader, stated that her leadership will expand the company's research capabilities and reinforce scientific rigour. Before joining Freshpet, Dr. Weeth established the first dedicated nutrition service at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in New Jersey. A graduate of the University of California, Davis, she completed her residency in clinical nutrition and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition in 2007. She will continue her roles with the ACVIM nutrition committee, the WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee, and the American Association of Veterinary Nutrition.

Dr. Weeth's appointment marks a significant step in Freshpet's research and development strategy. Her leadership will help advance studies on fresh pet food while maintaining strong ties with veterinary professionals. The company aims to further validate the benefits of whole-food diets for pets through her expertise.
