Fribourg proposes stricter rules on tobacco and disposable vapes to protect youth
Fribourg is looking to tighten rules on tobacco and e-cigarette sales. The State Council has opened a public consultation on stricter advertising and age verification measures for current events. Among the proposals is a ban on single-use electronic cigarettes, following similar moves in other Swiss cantons.
The planned restrictions come as part of a broader effort to curb youth vaping. Disposable e-cigarettes, often sold in sweet flavours, have been criticised for attracting younger users. Authorities also point to health risks and environmental harm caused by discarded devices.
Under the new measures, undercover test purchases would check whether retailers enforce age limits. Advertising for tobacco and e-cigarettes would be banned in public spaces, and free product giveaways would be prohibited.
Fribourg is not alone in this push. As of March 9, 2026, Geneva and Valais have already banned disposable vapes, while Basel-City and Bern are working on similar national news legislation. Fribourg's proposals align with these ongoing efforts across multiple cantons.
If approved, the new rules would mark a significant step in regulating tobacco and vaping products in Fribourg. The public consultation will gather feedback before any final decisions are made. The canton aims to reduce youth access while addressing environmental and health concerns linked to disposable e-cigarettes.
