German mathematician Gerd Faltings has won the 2023 Abel Prize, one of the highest honours in mathematics. The award recognises his groundbreaking work in arithmetic geometry, including the solution of the Mordell Conjecture. At 71, he now holds both the Abel Prize and the Fields Medal, the two most prestigious accolades in the field.

Faltings first made history in 1983 by proving the Mordell Conjecture, a long-standing problem in algebraic geometry. His solution demonstrated that certain types of equations have only a finite number of rational solutions. This breakthrough earned him the Fields Medal in 1986.

In 1991, he expanded on Paul Vojta's earlier work to solve the Mordell-Lang Conjecture. This result described how rational points are distributed on specific algebraic surfaces. Around the same time, he developed Faltings' Product Theorem, a tool that became essential for later research in arithmetic geometry. His contributions have influenced generations of mathematicians and shaped the direction of the field. Until 2023, he served as director emeritus at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics. The Abel Prize, worth 7.5 million Norwegian kroner (around €680,000), will be presented to him by Norway's Crown Prince Haakon on May 26.

The award celebrates Faltings' decades of work, from solving major conjectures to creating tools still used today. His achievements in arithmetic geometry have left a lasting impact on modern mathematics. The ceremony in May will formally recognise his contributions to the field.
