Lower Saxony: Customs uncovers illegal moonshine distillery in a house again - German customs dismantle illegal moonshine rings in Lower Saxony raids

Customs officers in Lower Saxony have cracked down on illegal alcohol production after uncovering multiple makeshift distilleries. In December, raids in Friesland district led to the seizure of four illegal stills and around 60 litres of high-proof spirits. Two men from Sande and Schortens are now under suspicion for their alleged involvement.

The latest operation targeted a 68-year-old homeowner in Cloppenburg, who now faces tax evasion charges for running an unlicensed moonshine distillery.

The raids began in December when customs agents discovered four illicit distillation devices in Friesland. Alongside the equipment, they confiscated roughly 60 litres of potent alcohol. Authorities later identified two men from Sande and Schortens as suspects linked to the operation.

A separate investigation in Cloppenburg led to the shutdown of another illegal distillery. The property owner, aged 68, was charged with tax evasion after officers found evidence of large-scale alcohol production. Officials stressed that distilling spirits without a license remains a criminal offence, regardless of whether the alcohol is for personal use.

Experts have repeatedly warned about the dangers of homemade spirits. Improvised stills often produce high levels of toxic methanol, which can cause severe health issues. Ingesting even small amounts can lead to blindness, respiratory failure, or brain swelling. The risk of contamination from other harmful byproducts also poses a serious threat to consumers.

Customs officials have dismissed the common misconception that producing alcohol for private consumption is legal. They reiterated that all distillation activities require proper licensing and compliance with tax regulations.

The crackdown has resulted in multiple seizures and criminal charges. Authorities continue to urge the public to avoid consuming unregulated alcohol due to its potentially deadly consequences. Further investigations into illegal distilleries across Lower Saxony remain ongoing.
