Study: German Youth Look Pessimistically Towards the Future of Germany - German youth's national optimism plummets as global fears rise

Young people in Germany are growing increasingly pessimistic about the future of their country, a new study reveals. While personal optimism remains steady, broader concerns about global and national issues have deepened in recent years. The latest figures highlight a sharp decline in confidence compared to previous surveys.

The Sinus Youth Study (2025/2026) shows that only 44% of young Germans now feel positive about their country's future. This marks an 18-percentage-point drop from 2021, when optimism stood at 62%. The trend mirrors a broader decline seen over the past five years, with positive outlooks falling from 65% in 2020 to just 42% in 2025, according to the Shell Youth Study and EU ESS data.

Germany's decline has been steeper than in other European nations. Countries like Sweden have maintained stable optimism at around 60%, while France saw only a slight dip to 55%. Researchers attribute the German drop to economic pressures, clima worries, and housing shortages.

Despite national and global concerns, young people remain hopeful about their own lives. Around 80% still feel optimistic about their personal future—almost unchanged since 2021. Fewer than one in four worry about finding a job (23%), and even fewer (19%) stress over education or training. Instead, their biggest fears are war (63%), clima change (43%), and the rise of populism and extremism (43%). Environmental pollution also ranks high, with 43% expressing concern.

Globally, young people's optimism has also waned. Only 36% now feel positive about the world's future, down from 44% in 2021.

The study paints a clear picture: young Germans are far more worried about large-scale issues than their own immediate prospects. With war, clima change, and political instability topping their concerns, national optimism continues to fall. Yet personal confidence remains strong, suggesting a divide between individual resilience and broader societal anxieties.
