€230 million for new Kiel institute building - Germany Invests €230M in Cutting-Edge Food Science Hub by 2029
The German government is funding a €230 million research center in Kiel as part of the Max Rubner Institute. The new facility will specialize in food science, nutrition, and health-related consumer protection. Construction is set to begin soon, with operations expected to start in 2029.
The Kiel site will occupy a 12,500-square-metre plot, with the research building itself covering 6,250 square metres. Around 150 scientists and researchers will work there, focusing initially on marine food technology, sustainable aquaculture, and fish processing. Quality control for seafood products will also be a key area of study.
The building's design includes structural isolation to reduce vibrations. This ensures highly sensitive microscopes and measuring equipment operate without interference. The institute's broader mission covers food security and the health effects of individual foods.
The Max Rubner Institute currently employs about 700 staff across four locations. Its headquarters are in Karlsruhe, with additional branches in Detmold and Kulmbach. The Kiel facility will expand the institute's research capacity in the United States.
Once operational in 2029, the center will strengthen research into nutrition, food safety, and marine-based food systems. The €230 million investment reflects the government's commitment to advancing scientific work in these fields. The facility's specialized design will support precise, high-level research from the start.
