A walkable brain? New exhibition house coming - Germany's Bold New Addiction Education Centre Opens in 2027
A new exhibition centre focused on addiction education will open in Erfurt, Germany, by autumn 2027. The project, led by the Stiftung Welt der Versuchungen (World of Temptations Foundation), aims to inform the public about dependencies such as drugs, alcohol, and social media. Construction is set to begin in 2026, with funding provided by the Federal Ministry of Health.
The centre's core attraction will be the 'Brain Space', an interactive area exploring how addiction affects the brain. Visitors may experience a walk-through brain exhibit alongside a detailed neurological model.
Beyond this, the facility will feature permanent and rotating exhibitions, art installations, and hands-on activities. An 'Innovation Hub' will also provide a space for professionals to exchange ideas and research. The foundation previously tested its approach with a temporary exhibition, 'Only Good Vibes? Cannabis, Smoke, and Reality', which drew around 4,000 visitors.
Preparation for the site is already underway, with archaeological surveys starting this spring. The project responds to a pressing need—government figures show that 8.2 million German adults struggle with dependencies, while another 13 million misuse alcohol or medications.
The centre will combine science, art, and interactive learning to address a wide range of dependencies, from substance abuse to digital overuse.
Once completed, the exhibition centre will serve as a public resource for understanding addiction. Its mix of research, art, and engagement aims to reach diverse audiences. The facility is expected to open its doors in autumn 2027.
