Fitness Studio Conglomerate LifeFit Continues Shopping Spree - Germany's fitness boom drives mergers as gym memberships hit 12.3 million
Germany's fitness industry is expanding rapidly as health awareness grows and the population ages. Investors are pouring money into the sector, drawn by its strong potential. In 2025, the number of gym members rose by 5.6%, reaching 12.3 million nationwide.
The market is also changing shape, with big chains buying up smaller competitors. Recent deals include *LifeFit* acquiring *Just Fit* and *Elixia*, while other major players like *Basic-Fit* and *AI Fitness* have also snapped up rival studios.
The Federal Cartel Office has approved LifeFit's takeover of Just Fit, a Cologne-based chain with 21 locations in the Rhineland. This follows LifeFit's earlier purchase of Elixia in 2024. The group now operates 203 studios across Germany under brands like Fitness First, Barry's, and Elixia.
This deal is part of a broader trend in 2025. *LifeFit* also acquired *Fit/One*, while *Basic-Fit* took over *Clever Fit*, and *AI Fitness* bought *Fit Star* and *Fitness Future*. Despite the consolidation, independent studios still attract customers by offering tailored, local services. The industry's growth is clear: there are now 9,647 fitness facilities in Germany. Many studios have rebranded themselves as wellness and health centres, appealing to a wider audience. However, no reliable data exists on how many new studios have opened since 2020 or which regions are growing fastest.
With 12.3 million members in 2025, Germany's fitness market continues to expand. Larger chains are absorbing smaller ones, reshaping the industry. Yet independent studios remain competitive by focusing on personalised service and community ties.
