Germany's healthcare clash: Pharmacists vs. doctors over expanded services

A heated debate has erupted in Germany over plans to expand pharmacy services, including vaccinations. The proposed Pharmacy Supply Development Act (ApoVWG) faces strong opposition from doctors' leaders, while pharmacists defend their expertise and track record. Tensions rose after sharp exchanges between medical and pharmacy representatives.

The dispute centres on the Federal Ministry of Health's proposal to widen pharmacies' role in healthcare. The National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) has firmly rejected the act, with its chairman, Dr. Andreas Gassen, criticising the government's approach. He argued that the ministry promised pharmacies a higher fixed fee without offering similar support to medical practices.

Marietheres Reher-Gremme, a pharmacist, fired back at Gassen's comments, calling them 'ignorant and arrogant.' She took particular issue with his description of pharmacists as 'medical laypersons,' stressing their rigorous training and vital role in patient safety. Reher-Gremme pointed out that pharmacists already help prevent adverse drug reactions and manage antibiotics responsibly, dismissing doctors' fears about overuse. The KBV's opposition extends to pharmacy-based vaccinations, warning of 'non-evidence-based, indiscriminate testing.' Yet Reher-Gremme countered that pharmacies safely administered flu and COVID-19 jabs during the pandemic without incident. She also argued that many doctors already recognise the value of working closely with pharmacists. Reher-Gremme called for a more collaborative approach, urging equal partnership between the two professions. A stronger alliance, she said, would build a more resilient healthcare system for the future.

The clash highlights deep divisions over the future of pharmacy services in Germany. Pharmacists insist their skills and experience justify expanded responsibilities, while doctors' leaders remain wary of potential risks. The outcome of the legislative debate will determine whether pharmacies take on a broader role in patient care.
