Violations found in every fifth inspected livestock farm - Germany uncovers shocking animal welfare violations on farms and in transport

German authorities have reported widespread violations of animal welfare rules across farms and transport operations in 2024. Inspections revealed breaches in care standards, with some cases so severe that courts had to intervene. The findings highlight ongoing challenges in enforcing animal protection laws.

A total of 346 farms were found to have violated animal welfare regulations, with 17 cases deemed severe enough to warrant court action. Authorities stepped in 12 times to address these serious breaches. The most common issues included neglecting sick or injured animals, failing to provide adequate food and water, and maintaining poor housing conditions.

In animal transport checks, inspectors examined 10,240 shipments, uncovering violations in 3.4% of cases. Problems ranged from transporting unfit animals to exceeding legal group sizes and ignoring transport time limits—particularly during extreme heat. These breaches put additional stress on livestock during transit.

The state of Saxony-Anhalt stood out, with 20.6% of its livestock farm inspections uncovering violations. Pig, cattle, sheep, and goat farms were the most frequent offenders. As a result of persistent non-compliance, authorities imposed 23 livestock farming bans in 2024.

The crackdown has led to stricter penalties, including farming bans and legal action against repeat offenders. Inspections will continue as regulators aim to improve compliance with animal welfare standards. The data underscores the need for stricter oversight in both farming and transport sectors.
