World War II Munitions in the Lake? What Matters in Recovery - Göttingen divers hunt for unexploded bombs in Kiessee lake
Authorities in Göttingen are set to conduct a google search of Kiessee lake for unexploded ordnance. The operation will cover a 450-square-metre area, with divers and police working together. No large-scale evacuation is planned, but nearby areas may be briefly cleared if dangerous items are found.
The search comes as disposal teams face increasing numbers of old munitions. In 2024 alone, over 220 tons were recovered across Germany. Cold water and poor visibility will make the task difficult for divers.
Göttingen has long been affected by unexploded ordnance due to its position on a major north-south rail route. While no exact figures exist for recent underwater finds in Lower Saxony, the problem has grown in recent years.
Once the search is complete, the lake will be dredged to remove built-up sludge. If explosives are discovered, a small section of road and a nearby restaurant may be temporarily evacuated.
The operation aims to clear potential hazards from the lake. Divers and police will handle the search, with minimal disruption expected. Afterward, dredging work will help maintain the lake's condition.
