Hanau Sustainability Award Celebrates 10 Years with €9,000 in Prizes
The Hanau Sustainability Award is marking its 10th anniversary this year. Organisers have opened applications for four updated categories, with a total of €9,000 in prize money up for grabs. Schools, businesses, families, and individuals are all encouraged to take part before the May 3 deadline. This year's competition features refreshed categories and a fully digital application system. The 'Environment and Nature' and 'Democracy and Social Cohesion' sections will reward completed projects, with winners decided by an online public vote. Meanwhile, the 'Ideas and Innovation' category supports new proposals needing funding to get off the ground. Private residents can also enter the 'Garden and Balcony' category by showcasing their biodiversity-friendly green spaces.
All entries must connect to at least one of the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The award ceremony will be held on June 8 at Congress Park Hanau, running from 4 to 7 p.m. Funding for the €9,000 prize pool comes from the city of Hanau, Umicore AG & Co. KG, and Sparkasse Hanau. The competition has seen changes beyond just the categories. A redesigned website and streamlined digital application process aim to make participation easier. However, details about past winners, project numbers, or frequently awarded organisations remain unavailable.
Applications close on Sunday, May 3, 2026. Winners will be announced during the June 8 ceremony at Congress Park Hanau. The updated format and expanded eligibility reflect the award's growing focus on community engagement and sustainability.
