Heroic Rescue Saves Three Starving Largha Seal Pups in Magadan

A rescue mission in Magadan has saved three young largha seals from starvation. Yulia Melnikova, a senior engineer with the Federal Penitentiary Service, led the operation after spotting the animals in critical condition. The pups were found severely emaciated due to an unusually warm winter stripping them of food sources. Melnikova first reached out to the Tulen Marine Mammal Rehabilitation Center in Primorye for expert advice. Under the centre’s director, she successfully treated the first pup, stabilising its health.

The following day, she rescued a second seal and continued its care at home. That same evening, a third pup arrived, bringing the total to three seals under her supervision. Recognising the need for specialised training, officials arranged for a marine mammal expert from Primorye to travel to Magadan. The expert will now teach volunteers round-the-clock rehabilitation techniques to ensure future rescues are just as effective.

The three largha seals now have a real chance at survival. With proper rehabilitation and ongoing care, they may eventually return to the wild. The mission also equips local volunteers with the skills to handle similar emergencies in the future.
