Hidden dangers in children's snacks: High sugar, salt, and unclear labels exposed
A recent study by the Austrian Chamber of Labor has examined 68 children's snacks, revealing wide variations in nutritional quality. Many products contained high levels of sugar, salt, and additives, despite being marketed for young consumers. The findings also highlighted concerns over unclear age recommendations on packaging.
The tested snacks came in a range of flavours, from sweet and fruity to savoury and spicy. Pack sizes were typically small, around 30 grams, with prices spanning €0.75 to €2.99 per pack. When calculated per 100 grams, costs ranged from €1.25 to €9.93.
Six of the products included added sugar or syrup, with sugar levels between 0.9 and 30.8 grams per 100 grams. Another 26 used fruit juice concentrates as sweeteners. Fat content also varied greatly, from 0.7 to 30 percent, resulting in energy values between 324 and 531 kcal per 100 grams.
Salt levels raised further concerns. Five snacks had moderate salt content, while one was classified as high in salt. Many products also relied on flavourings, with seven containing them and two using artificial colourings. Additional additives, such as emulsifiers and acidity regulators, appeared in some items.
A notable issue was the lack of age recommendations on some packaging. This was particularly problematic for snacks high in sugar, salt, and additives, including rice and corn waffles, flips, and crisp sticks. The study suggested that even products marketed for kindergarten or school-aged children might not always be suitable.
The Austrian Chamber of Labor has advised parents to opt for simpler, healthier alternatives. Plain, low-salt grain snacks paired with fresh fruit or vegetables were recommended as better choices. The study's results highlight the need for clearer labelling and more balanced options in children's snack products.
