How abandonment shaped d'Alembert's Enlightenment legacy and contradictions

Jean le Rond d’Alembert was left as an infant on the steps of a Paris church in 1717. His early abandonment shaped a life marked by intellectual brilliance and deep personal contradictions. Over time, he rose to become one of the Enlightenment’s most influential figures. D’Alembert’s mother, Claudine Guérin de Tencin, abandoned him without hesitation. His father, Louis-Camus Destouches, ensured his education but never claimed him. This rejection fuelled his pursuit of precision, particularly in mathematics, where he sought authority and structure.

By 26, he had already made a lasting impact on science. His 1743 work, Traité de dynamique, introduced d’Alembert’s principle, a cornerstone of analytical mechanics. The Royal Academy of Sciences admitted him that same year, recognising his contributions.

His most famous role came as co-director of the Encyclopédie, a radical project that challenged the Catholic Church and the monarchy. D’Alembert wrote its Preliminary Discourse, giving the work philosophical weight and scientific credibility. Yet, under pressure from authorities, he resigned as editor in 1758—though he continued to contribute behind the scenes.

Later, he became perpetual secretary of the Académie Française in 1772, shaping Parisian intellectual life until his death in 1783. His career reflected the Enlightenment’s core tension: a belief in reason’s power to order the world, set against the reality of its resistance. D’Alembert’s legacy endures in both mathematics and philosophy. His work on the Encyclopédie helped dismantle old epistemological foundations, paving the way for modern thought. Though his life was marked by personal rejection, his ideas left an indelible mark on history.
