Blueberries have grown in popularity worldwide over the past decade. Once a seasonal treat, they now appear in kitchens year-round, thanks to expanded farming and global trade. These small, flavourful berries pack a nutritional punch while offering versatility in both sweet and savoury dishes.
Native to North America, blueberries grow on bushes and belong to the same family as cranberries and bilberries. Three main varieties dominate production: Highbush, Rabbiteye, and Lowbush, with peak harvests from June to September. Their sweet-tart taste pairs well with warm spices like cinnamon and vanilla, as well as bold flavours such as ginger, citrus, and balsamic vinegar.
Farming of blueberries has expanded rapidly. Between 2015 and 2024, the global cultivated area more than doubled, rising from around 100,000 hectares to over 250,000. Production volumes followed suit, climbing from roughly 600,000 metric tons to more than 1.2 million. Countries like Peru, Chile, and the US have driven much of this growth.
Beyond their taste, blueberries are rich in antioxidants, including anthocyanins, polyphenols, and vitamin C. These compounds, particularly anthocyanins, have been linked to neuroprotective benefits, supporting motor and cognitive function. A single cup also provides about 3.6 grams of fibre, a mix of soluble and insoluble types.
In the kitchen, blueberries work well in drinks like smoothies, infused water, or blueberry mint lemonade. They can also enhance savoury dishes, such as barbecue sauce, salads, or appetisers with smoked blueberry compote. For baking, tossing frozen berries in a tablespoon of flour helps prevent them from bursting and keeps the batter moist.
When buying fresh blueberries, look for plump, firm berries with smooth, dark purple or deep blue skin. Avoid any that appear mouldy, shriveled, or leaky.
The rise in blueberry farming reflects their growing demand across the globe. With a balance of health benefits and culinary flexibility, they remain a staple in both everyday meals and creative recipes. Their year-round availability now makes them easier to include in a variety of dishes.
