A study into the eating and exercise habits of extremely lean people has uncovered some surprising patterns. Fitness and nutrition expert Thomas DeLauer analysed over 200 individuals with body fat percentages below 12 percent. Their routines challenge common dieting advice, showing how small adjustments can make a big difference in maintaining low body fat. Most of these individuals skip breakfast, which lowers their insulin levels and boosts glucagon—a hormone that helps burn fat. They also report feeling more alert and focused when exercising on an empty stomach.

Their largest meal is lunch, while dinner remains light. This approach may help regulate metabolism more effectively. Portion control plays a key role, with many opting for lower-fat foods and avoiding overeating. When it comes to treats, dark chocolate is a favourite. It contains theobromine, a compound linked to improved fat metabolism. Despite their discipline, they occasionally enjoy small indulgences without guilt. Activity levels also set them apart. These individuals tend to be naturally restless, moving more throughout the day and burning extra calories without structured workouts.

The findings suggest that intuitive eating, strategic meal timing, and staying active contribute to their lean physiques. By skipping breakfast, controlling portions, and choosing certain foods, they maintain low body fat without extreme restrictions. Their habits highlight how small, consistent choices can lead to long-term results.
