India debuts two high-yield avocado varieties for tropical farmers
Two new avocado varieties, Arka Supreme and Arka Coorg Ravi, have been introduced by the ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR) in Bengaluru. These high-yielding types are designed to thrive in India’s tropical and subtropical regions, offering better productivity for farmers and processors alike. Avocado, originally from Central America, grows best in warm climates with well-drained, moderately organic soil. In India, states like Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and parts of the North-East provide ideal conditions for its cultivation.
The two new varieties bring distinct advantages. Arka Supreme produces around 175 to 200 kilograms of fruit per plant each year, with individual fruits weighing between 367 to 428 grams. Arka Coorg Ravi, on the other hand, yields slightly less—150 to 200 kilograms per plant—but its larger fruits range from 450 to 600 grams. This variety also boasts a pulp recovery rate exceeding 80%, making it particularly useful for both fresh consumption and food processing. Avocados are known for their rich nutritional profile. A 100-gram serving contains significant calories, healthy fats, and dietary fibre, along with vitamins K and C, plus minerals like potassium. The fruit’s high levels of monounsaturated fats, especially oleic acid, contribute to heart health and improve the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Commonly eaten raw in salads, sandwiches, or smoothies, avocados are also a key ingredient in guacamole. Their versatility and health benefits have made them increasingly popular in Indian diets.
The introduction of Arka Supreme and Arka Coorg Ravi expands avocado farming opportunities in India. With their high yields and adaptability, these varieties could boost local production and meet growing demand. The fruit’s nutritional value and culinary flexibility further support its rising popularity across the country.
