Joana Cordeiro to lead Liberal Initiative in Portugal's Strategic Health Pact talks

Joana Cordeiro has been chosen to represent the Liberal Initiative in talks for the Strategic Health Pact. Her appointment was widely expected, given her active role in health policy. The pact aims to shape Portugal’s long-term healthcare strategy under coordination by former Health Minister Adalberto Campos Fernandes. Cordeiro, elected to Parliament in 2022, has spent the last four years closely following the health sector. She currently serves as coordinator of the liberal parliamentary group and vice president of the Health Committee. Alongside this, she is specialising in Hospital Administration at NOVA University Lisbon’s National School of Public Health.

Her political work centres on a people-focused approach, prioritising measurable health improvements. She will join other negotiators, including PS deputy Mariana Vieira da Silva, Livre’s Paulo Muaço, and Left Bloc physician Bruno Maia. Meetings with political parties and sector representatives are planned, though no fixed schedule has been set.

President António José Seguro has stressed the pact’s importance in securing cross-party agreement. The goal is to establish a stable, medium- to long-term vision for the country’s health system. The negotiations will bring together lawmakers from different parties to define Portugal’s healthcare future. Cordeiro’s role reflects her growing influence in health policy, backed by her parliamentary experience and ongoing studies. The outcome will determine how the sector evolves in the coming years.
