Kazakhstan's Bold Shift to DeepTech and Higher Education Reform

Kazakhstan is pushing ahead with major reforms in higher education and technology. The government has outlined new measures to improve access to universities while shifting toward a DeepTech and advanced manufacturing economy. Recent progress includes high-profile infrastructure projects and international partnerships. The changes began after Minister Sayasat Nurbek's announcement in 2023. Since then, Kazakhstan has invested heavily in its DeepTech sector. In 2024, the Astana DeepTech Hub opened with a $200 million budget. Further developments followed in 2025, including a collaboration with Germany's Fraunhofer Society to launch AI-driven manufacturing labs in Almaty.

The country has also partnered with South Korea's KIST to build semiconductor fabrication facilities in Nur-Sultan. These projects align with broader reforms aimed at modernising higher education. The president recently reviewed the ministry's strategic plans, focusing on quality improvements and long-term growth in science and technology. The ministry's transition to a DeepTech-driven economy is now well underway. New infrastructure and international partnerships have strengthened the sector. With ongoing reforms, the government expects further advancements in education and high-tech industries.
