Nearly 1.9 million children under five in Kenya suffer from stunted growth, according to the 2022 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey. The issue is most severe in arid and semi-arid regions like Turkana, where over 40% of young children are affected. Now, local authorities are stepping up efforts to tackle the problem through education and community action.

In Baringo County, malnutrition impacts two in every ten children under five. The worst-hit areas are Mogotio and Tiaty sub-counties, where cases remain high. Chronic undernutrition in early childhood can damage brain development, reduce learning ability, and lower future productivity.

Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) will play a key role in the new initiative. They will train local families on spotting early signs of malnutrition and improving diets. Women, as primary caregivers, are being encouraged to lead these efforts at home.

The county government is also rolling out a school-based programme to educate teachers about malnutrition. Lessons will focus on the importance of balanced meals, including fruits and quality supplements, to boost children's immune systems and growth. Early detection remains a priority, as delayed action can worsen long-term health effects.

The combined efforts of volunteers, schools, and caregivers aim to reduce malnutrition rates in Baringo and beyond. By teaching communities about nutrition and early intervention, the programme seeks to improve child health and development. Officials hope these measures will lead to measurable progress in the coming years.
