Kenyan Expert Challenges Vegan Diets Over Nutrition and Cost Concerns

A debate over the health and cost implications of vegan diets has resurfaced after recent comments by a Kenyan nutrition expert. Samuel Maina, a lecturer at Kenya Medical Training College, questioned the practice of avoiding animal-derived foods purely for ethical reasons. His remarks follow findings from a large-scale 2021 study on vegan eating habits. In 2021, Professor John Drawley from the University of California School of Public Health led a study involving 150,000 vegans. The research revealed that strict vegetarians often consumed larger portions to meet their daily calorie needs. It also found that those following plant-based diets spent considerably more on food compared to non-vegetarians.

Maina, a nutritionist at KMTC's Nairobi campus, argued that animal products like honey, eggs, milk, and blood provide important nutritional advantages. He suggested that completely cutting out these foods could overlook their health benefits.

The discussion highlights differing views on the practicality and affordability of vegan diets. While some studies point to higher food consumption and costs, experts like Maina continue to advocate for the nutritional value of certain animal-derived products. No further updates on the scientific or public debate around vegan nutrition have been reported since 2021.
