Khabarovsk Hospital unveils high-tech tuberculosis ward for drug-resistant cases
A new paid tuberculosis ward has opened at Khabarovsk Hospital, marking a major upgrade for medical care in the Russian Far East. Construction began in 2019, and the facility is now fully operational, equipped with advanced technology to treat severe and drug-resistant cases of the disease.
The ward cost 1.5 billion rubles (around $16.5 million) to build and can accommodate up to 140 patients. Inside, it features an admissions department, a specialised unit for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, a surgical ward, three operating theatres, and a laboratory. High-dependency rooms are isolated, and accessible wards cater to critically ill and disabled patients.
Since its opening in 2023, the department has treated 47 patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis as of March 2026. Surgeries have already started, with one patient successfully recovering after five years of medication. The ward also includes an intensive care unit for post-operative and critically ill cases. The facility is fitted with over 300 million rubles ($3.3 million) worth of state-of-the-art medical equipment. Patients have praised the modern facilities, noting the comfortable conditions that aid recovery. The region, known as an endemic zone for tuberculosis, now has a dedicated centre for treating the most severe cases.
The new ward strengthens Khabarovsk's ability to handle complex tuberculosis cases. With specialised units, advanced technology, and a focus on patient comfort, it provides critical support for the Russian Far East. Treatment for multidrug-resistant cases is now more accessible in the region.
