Lucerne advances gender equality despite delays in 2025 strategy rollout
Lucerne's city administration has made steady progress in implementing its gender equality strategy, according to City President Beat Züsli. While not all planned measures launched in 2025 due to delays, officials remain on track with key initiatives. A focus on diversity in schools and public workshops on civil courage has already strengthened equality efforts across the city.
In 2025, Lucerne prioritised gender equality through several targeted actions. The annual theme of 'masculinities' helped raise public awareness, while diversity measures were embedded into school programmes. Public workshops on civil courage also trained participants to address boundary violations in shared spaces.
The city reviewed its workplace policies to earn the LGBTI label, receiving strong feedback from assessors. However, 21 planned measures faced setbacks, mostly due to pending political decisions and coordination issues with external partners. The remaining steps will now roll out in 2026. Next year's theme, 'The History of Equality', will highlight pivotal moments in Lucerne's gender equality journey. Meanwhile, Switzerland ranks 8th in the 2026 Gay Travel Index, though it lost points for not offering a third gender option on official documents. Cities like Geneva and Zurich continue to lead visibility efforts, hosting major Pride events in 2025.
Lucerne's equality strategy has seen measurable advances, with school programmes and workplace reviews already in place. The delayed measures will proceed in 2026, ensuring the city stays aligned with its long-term goals. Officials confirm that ongoing political and logistical challenges have not derailed the overall plan.
