Mainz's Rose Monday celebrations saw a sharp rise in alcohol-related emergencies this year. Emergency crews worked for nearly 14 hours to handle incidents, including injuries and severe intoxication. Police also seized around 190 litres of alcohol during the event.
The festivities began with the traditional carnival parade, but it was briefly stopped after a man in his 40s collapsed from heavy drinking. Elsewhere, a woman in her mid-20s was found unconscious at the main train station due to extreme intoxication.
A 14-year-old girl was taken to hospital by her mother after drinking too much. In total, 30 minors received treatment for alcohol-related issues. Another person suffered serious injuries after falling down stairs while heavily drunk.
Emergency teams treated 323 people—67 fewer than last year—with about 80 cases linked to alcohol. Broken glass, fights, and falls led to 45 hospitalisations. One responder also suffered a minor hand injury while breaking up a brawl.
The celebrations stretched emergency services thin, with over 500 volunteers and professionals on duty. Alcohol played a major role in incidents, from hospitalisations to public safety interventions. Authorities have yet to release further details on the full impact of underage drinking during the event.
