Malaysia launches emergency cloud seeding to combat severe drought

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has ordered urgent cloud seeding operations in northern Peninsular Malaysia. The move comes as Kedah and Perlis face prolonged dry weather, causing hardship for local farmers and padi growers. Both the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) and the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) have been instructed to take immediate action. The decision follows a longer-than-usual dry spell in northern Kedah, where high temperatures and low rainfall have disrupted agricultural activities. Anwar Ibrahim has called for accelerated efforts, directing the Meteorological Department to expand operations in the worst-hit areas.

The RMAF will intensify its cloud seeding missions over the coming days. Meanwhile, the JBPM will continue its own seeding flights to boost rainfall. Authorities are also considering drone technology to improve efficiency and overcome logistical challenges in remote locations. The urgency stems from the current hot and dry conditions, which threaten crops and water supplies. The government aims to ease the strain on farmers and stabilise the situation as quickly as possible.

The operations will focus on Kedah and Perlis, where the dry spell has been most severe. Cloud seeding efforts are expected to continue until rainfall levels return to normal. Officials will monitor the results closely to assess their impact on affected communities.
