Elderly Women Pushed to the Ground - Perpetrator Must Undergo Therapy - Man with schizophrenia acquitted after violent attacks on elderly victims

A man with severe mental health issues has been acquitted of assault after attacking multiple elderly people in a series of violent incidents. The court ruled that he was not criminally responsible due to diminished capacity caused by paranoid schizophrenia and alcohol abuse.

The judge ordered mandatory psychiatric treatment, warning that the defendant remains a public danger if left untreated.

The attacks began when the man shoved two elderly women to the ground, leaving them with serious injuries. He then targeted an 86-year-old woman, fracturing her upper arm and pelvic ring. In another incident, he snatched a walker from an 87-year-old woman and pushed her down, causing further harm.

He also assaulted a cyclist who had just dismounted, though the blow may not have connected. During his arrest, he hurled insults at police officers and made threats while being transported to the station.

Medical assessments confirmed a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia alongside chronic alcohol dependency. The court determined that his condition impaired his ability to understand his actions. As a result, he was found not guilty by reason of diminished capacity and placed under compulsory treatment.

Since the ruling, he has been receiving psychiatric care, taking prescribed medication, and reducing his alcohol intake.

The defendant will remain in treatment for the foreseeable future. The court's decision hinged on medical evidence proving his inability to control his actions at the time of the attacks. Authorities will monitor his progress to assess any future risk to public safety.
