Measles cases in NYC linked to international travel spark health alerts

Five cases of measles have been recorded in New York City this year, each tied to international travel. Health officials confirmed the latest infection involved an unvaccinated adult who attended a performance at the Metropolitan Opera House before testing positive. The infected individual, who had recently travelled abroad, visited the Met Opera’s matinee of La Bohème on April 25. Following the diagnosis, the venue emailed attendees, urging them to watch for symptoms and check their vaccination status.

The person also dined at Norma, an Italian restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen, along with another Manhattan eatery. They later sought care at healthcare facilities in the borough. Symptoms of measles usually emerge 11 to 12 days after exposure, with the virus spreading up to four days before a rash appears. Across New York state, ten measles cases have been reported in 2024. One involved an unvaccinated child under five in Nassau County. Despite these incidents, city health authorities opted against a widespread alert, citing low general risk and the ability of affected businesses to notify patrons directly.

The recent cases highlight the ongoing risk of measles linked to international travel. Health officials continue to monitor exposures while encouraging vaccination as the most effective prevention. No broader public warnings have been issued at this time.
