Measles exposure alert issued for Iowa hotel after infected traveler's stay

A possible measles exposure has been reported at the Comfort Inn and Suites in Independence, Iowa. Health officials confirmed that an infected traveller from Illinois stayed at the hotel in early March while contagious. Authorities are now urging anyone who visited the location during that time to stay alert for symptoms.

An Illinois resident carrying the measles virus checked into the Comfort Inn and Suites in Independence between March 4 and March 5. Iowa health officials later issued a public health alert after confirming the exposure. The virus can remain airborne for up to two hours, even after an infected person has left the area.

The Iowa Department of Public Health advised visitors to monitor for common measles symptoms. These include fever, cough, red or watery eyes, a runny nose, and a distinctive skin rash. Anyone who suspects exposure should contact their doctor or the nearest emergency department before visiting in person. So far in 2026, Iowa has recorded no measles cases among its residents. However, the state saw nine confirmed cases in 2025. No additional public health measures have been announced for those exposed at the hotel who later develop symptoms and interact with others.

The alert follows a confirmed case linked to an out-of-state visitor. Health officials continue to track potential exposures from the hotel stay. Those who were present during the specified dates are advised to remain vigilant for signs of infection.
