Miracle Baby Born at 22 Weeks Thrives After 142 Days in NICU

A baby born at just 22 weeks has defied the odds after spending nearly five months in intensive care. Alton Krause, who weighed only 1 pound at birth, has now grown to 12 pounds and is thriving at home with his family. His parents recently returned to the hospital to thank the medical team who saved his life. Kayla Krause discovered she was pregnant on Mother’s Day last year. But in September, Alton arrived four months early, facing severe health risks. Doctors diagnosed him with a serious lung condition and placed him on a high-frequency jet ventilator. The device works by pulsing tiny breaths into the lungs up to 400 times a second, according to neonatologist Dr. Eddie Chang.

Alton spent 142 days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Jefferson Abington. Despite the long battle, he survived without complications. Now, he is meeting all his developmental milestones, much to the relief of his family. The Krauses recently visited the NICU team to express their gratitude. This Mother’s Day, they will celebrate at home with Alton—something they once feared might never happen.

Alton’s recovery marks a rare success for such an extremely premature birth. His progress has allowed the family to move forward after months of uncertainty. They now look ahead to a future with their healthy baby boy at home.
