MIT Grad Wins Goldwater Scholarship for Groundbreaking Cancer Research and Leadership
Alex Tang, a recent MIT graduate with dual degrees in chemistry and biology, has been awarded the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship. The honour recognises his outstanding academic work and research in cancer treatment, alongside his leadership roles on campus and in athletics. At MIT, Tang balanced rigorous studies with high-level commitments. He minored in biomedical engineering while serving as editor-in-chief of The Tech, the university's student newspaper. His academic focus extended into cutting-edge research at the Nir Hacohen Lab at the Broad Institute, where he investigated combined immunotherapy and targeted molecular therapy for metastatic colorectal cancer. Additionally, he led the creation of a prognostic assay designed to improve lung cancer outcomes.
Beyond the lab, Tang has excelled as a competitive triathlete. In 2025, he secured third place in his age group at the Boston Triathlon. His family has consistently supported both his athletic and scholarly ambitions. Looking ahead, Tang plans to begin medical school this autumn. His long-term goal is to become a physician-scientist specialising in precision oncology, merging clinical practice with cancer research.
The Goldwater Scholarship highlights Tang's achievements in science, leadership, and athletics. With medical school on the horizon, he is set to continue his work at the intersection of medicine and research. His focus remains on advancing precision oncology for future patients.
