A mobile student lab run by the Food and Nutrition Lab at Hochschule Niederrhein has reached over 1,000 students in its first year. The initiative offers hands-on workshops, including a recent session where 12th-grade chemistry pupils explored the science of sugar.

The advanced chemistry class from Anne Frank Comprehensive School took part in a sugar-focused workshop. Students baked cookies using different sweeteners to compare their properties and effects. They also analysed sugar levels in various drinks.

The Mobile Student Lab provides 60-minute 'Science Snacks' sessions on topics like plant-based drinks and alternative proteins. Schools can request custom workshops tailored to their needs. Beyond experiments, the lab supports career guidance by offering internships in university nutrition science labs. Professor Dr. Miriam Sari and Lara Sibum lead the project. Since its launch a year ago, the mobile lab has engaged students across the region. More details and booking options are available on the Food and Nutrition Lab's website.

The programme has already introduced over 1,000 students to practical food science. Workshops continue to expand, with schools able to suggest new topics. The lab's internship opportunities also help students explore careers in nutrition research.
