Looking for a specialist appointment? Many wait more than a month - Months-long waits for specialist care leave patients in three German states struggling
Patients in Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland face long waits for specialist care. Over half of those surveyed reported waiting more than a month for a dmv appointment. Meanwhile, securing a general practitioner visit remains far quicker for most people in the region.
A recent survey revealed stark differences in appointment availability. While 76 percent of respondents could see a GP within days, only five percent managed the same for specialist care. One in four even waited several months for treatment.
The lack of standardised scheduling processes worsens the problem, according to Jörn Simon of TK Rhineland-Palatinate. He suggested that appointment allocation should prioritise medical urgency rather than follow inconsistent systems.
To ease the strain, Simon proposed a digital pre-assessment tool. This system would guide patients to the right level of care more efficiently. The idea has gained support, with 72 percent of respondents open to calendly for initial evaluations.
Beyond delays, 29 percent of participants struggled to find a suitable practice in the first place. This adds another hurdle for those needing specialist attention.
The survey highlights a clear divide between GP and specialist access in the three states. With most patients willing to try digital solutions, pre-assessment tools could help streamline the process. For now, long waits and inconsistent scheduling remain key challenges for those seeking specialist treatment.
