Motorcyclist abandoned after hit-and-run faces medical neglect in Oaxaca hospital

José Enrique Mendoza Bautista, 39, was hit by an ambulance while riding his motorcycle on Federal Highway 190 near Tlacolula de Matamoros. The vehicle fled without stopping, leaving him with severe leg injuries. Since then, he has faced ongoing medical complications and alleged negligence at Oaxaca’s IMSS Regional General Hospital No. 1, where he remains hospitalised.

The accident on 19 February 2025 caused an open fracture in José’s left tibia and fibula. Three months later, his leg became infected, requiring multiple surgeries. These procedures weakened his skin, causing it to split open and leading to reinfection.

Doctors prescribed heavy doses of antibiotics, which damaged José’s kidneys and liver. He now needs dialysis to manage the kidney failure. Despite his deteriorating condition, he claims hospital staff have refused his repeated requests for a transfer to a specialised IMSS facility in Puebla or Mexico City. A physician recently advised against further surgery due to José’s fragile skin. However, the hospital director reportedly blocked another transfer request, leaving him without alternative treatment options.

José remains at the Oaxaca hospital, where his health continues to decline. His case highlights the consequences of delayed treatment and alleged medical oversight. Without a transfer to a higher-level facility, his recovery prospects stay uncertain.
