Nizhny Novgorod Zoo Welcomes Rare Bison and Penguins This Spring
Nizhny Novgorod Zoo has welcomed two new additions this spring—a young European bison and a group of Humboldt penguins. The bison arrived as a gift from Belarus A three-year-old female European bison joined the zoo on 2 April, coinciding with Russia-Belarus Unity Day. The animal was sent as a gift from Mogilev Zoo in Belarus and will soon meet the zoo's existing bison family. Before that, she must complete mandatory veterinary checks.
The zoo has also introduced four male Humboldt penguins, all of which have reached sexual maturity. Staff are now waiting for female penguins to select their mates. The new arrivals aim to establish breeding pairs within the colony. Last December, the zoo expanded its big cat collection with a male snow leopard named Basilea. Now, visitors and residents have the chance to get involved—the zoo is inviting name suggestions for the new bison.
The bison and penguins mark the latest additions to Nizhny Novgorod Zoo's growing animal population. The zoo expects the breeding programmes to support conservation efforts while engaging the public in naming the new bison.
