More than 140 Children at Elementary School Infected with Norovirus - Norovirus outbreak hits 190 pupils and staff in Bad Laer schools

A norovirus outbreak has struck schools in Bad Laer, affecting over 190 pupils and staff. The first cases emerged on Tuesday, with lab results confirming the virus overnight. Health officials are now investigating the source of the infection.

The outbreak began at a local primary school, where more than 140 children have fallen ill. Symptoms include sudden, severe vomiting and diarrhoea—hallmarks of norovirus infection. Six teachers at the same school have also tested positive.

Nearby, a secondary school reported 53 cases among its students. Despite the spread, school meals have been ruled out as a likely cause. The virus, known for its high contagion, remains under investigation as authorities work to pinpoint its origin.

Schools will stay open, but stricter hygiene measures have been introduced. Infected pupils must stay home for at least 48 hours after their symptoms end. Norovirus, a leading cause of acute gastroenteritis, spreads quickly in close-contact settings like classrooms.

The outbreak has disrupted routines for nearly 200 students and staff. Health officials continue to monitor the situation while reinforcing hygiene protocols. Those affected must follow isolation guidelines to prevent further transmission.
