Novo Nordisk struggles as Eli Lilly overtakes GLP-1 drug dominance

Novo Nordisk, a prominent player in the GLP-1 drug market, has faced recent setbacks despite its robust position. The company's shares have lagged behind the broader stock market over the past two years, while competition from Eli Lilly intensifies. A new study also showed its experimental weight loss drug, CagriSema, fell short of Lilly's Zepbound in effectiveness.

Novo Nordisk once dominated the GLP-1 sector with its blockbuster treatments Ozempic and Wegovy. Between 2023 and 2025, its global market share dropped from around 65% to 45%. Meanwhile, Eli Lilly's share surged from 30% to 50%, propelled by the success of Mounjaro and Zepbound, which demonstrated superior results in trials and secured rapid U.S. approval.

The company's revenue is now projected to decline in 2026 as Lilly's drugs capture more market share. Novo Nordisk's next-generation weight loss drug, CagriSema, failed to match Zepbound's results in a recent phase 3 trial, adding to its challenges.

Still, Novo Nordisk retains its leadership in diabetes treatments and boasts a strong pipeline of GLP-1 candidates. It also maintains substantial cash reserves for potential acquisitions and licensing deals. The firm's dividend could offer steady returns for long-term investors, even as competition intensifies.

Novo Nordisk's stock may attract patient investors due to its deep expertise and financial strength. However, its growth prospects face constraints from rising competition and slower revenue forecasts. The company's future hinges on its ability to diversify and innovate in a crowded market.
