Pasir Gudang Hospital begins phased operations amid staff shortages

Pasir Gudang Hospital (HPG) has begun operating in stages to serve the local community. The facility, originally set to open in phases from August 2025, faced delays due to technical problems and staff shortages. Now, authorities are pushing for full operations by September this year. The hospital’s launch was initially scheduled for August 1, 2025, but complications forced a postponement. By late last year, HPG started staggered operations to address urgent healthcare demands in the area.

Currently, only 41% of the hospital’s 2,271 positions have been filled. The Johor government is working to recruit staff for the remaining 59% of vacancies by September. This push follows a decree from Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail, who ordered the hospital to become fully operational without further delay. Out of the planned 304 beds, 157 are now in use. Fourteen specialist clinics and clinical services are already running at full capacity. The state government has set a target for all beds to be operational by September, aligning with the regent’s directive.

HPG’s gradual rollout has eased some pressure on local healthcare services. With 14 clinics already active and 157 beds in operation, the hospital is moving closer to full capacity. The government’s hiring drive aims to ensure all 304 beds and remaining services are functional by the September deadline.
