Patanjali's World Herbal Encyclopedia Bridges Ayurveda and Modern Science

Patanjali's World Herbal Encyclopedia (WHE) has become a key digital resource for medicinal plant data. Launched in 2023, the portal offers detailed profiles of thousands of plants, including four prized Ayurvedic herbs: Pipli, Kutki, Jatamansi, and Nagkesar. Researchers and practitioners now use it to explore botanical details, traditional uses, and scientific classifications.

The WHE portal provides dynamic filtering tools to search plants by scientific names, vernacular terms, medicinal uses, and even phylogenetic groups. Each entry includes full profiling—covering habitat, botanical descriptions, Ayurvedic properties, and edible or therapeutic applications. Users can also view botanical illustrations and handmade canvas paintings of the plants.

Four notable herbs featured on the platform have long been valued in Ayurveda. **Pipli** is known for its rejuvenating effects, often used to treat respiratory illnesses and strengthen immunity. **Kutki** supports liver health, boosts infection resistance, and enhances overall immunity. **Jatamansi**, a rare herb, acts as both a brain stimulant and a calming agent. **Nagkesar**, or 'Cobra Saffron', has potent anti-inflammatory and astringent properties, aiding digestion and managing bleeding disorders. Since its launch, the portal has gained traction in Ayurvedic research. By 2026, over 50 Indian herbal studies cited its data, and institutions like the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) and Banaras Hindu University incorporated it into their databases. However, mainstream scientific adoption remains limited due to ongoing concerns about data validation.

The WHE portal now serves as a bridge between traditional Ayurvedic knowledge and modern research. Its structured taxonomy, detailed plant profiles, and growing citations highlight its role in herbal studies. Yet wider scientific acceptance still depends on addressing validation challenges in the years ahead.
