Philippines speeds up medical aid with expanded healthcare program reforms

The Philippine government is taking steps to speed up medical aid for those struggling with healthcare costs. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has ordered faster delivery of assistance under the Medical Assistance to Indigent and Financially Incapacitated Patients Program (MAIFIP). Officials are now working to cut red tape and expand support for both poor and middle-class families. In February, the Department of Health (DOH) released updated guidelines to widen MAIFIP’s coverage. The changes ensure full payment of doctors’ fees and broader access to essential services like medicines, tests, and hospital care. Funding for the program has also risen, climbing from PHP41.16 billion to PHP51.6 billion in the 2026 budget.

Executive Secretary Ralph Recto and Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa recently met to tackle persistent issues in the system. Patients often face long queues, repeated paperwork, and unnecessary delays when seeking help. The government aims to simplify processes and make assistance more accessible.

Digital platforms will play a bigger role in streamlining services. By adopting technology, officials hope to make public healthcare faster, clearer, and more responsive. The goal is to remove barriers so that aid reaches those in need without unnecessary hassle. The expanded MAIFIP now covers more medical services and includes middle-class families alongside the poor. With increased funding and digital improvements, the program aims to deliver support more efficiently.
