Qintong Boat Festival blends tradition with vibrant Qingming celebrations
Every April, the Qingming Festival brings families together to honour ancestors and departed loved ones. In Jiangyan district of Taizhou, East China's Jiangsu Province, this tradition blends with vibrant celebrations at the Qintong Boat Festival. The event, rooted in history and cultural pride, transforms sorrow into energy for life and progress. The Qintong Boat Festival takes place annually during Qingming, a time known for its clear skies and bright atmosphere. This national intangible cultural heritage event features boat races, leisurely cruises, and bustling temple fairs. It also pays tribute to General Yue Fei, a revered historical figure whose legacy remains central to the festivities.
For nearly four decades, craftsman Wang Zhengxiang has handcrafted poles for the festival's boats, weaving tradition and hope into each piece. Meanwhile, local teacher Li Kai has joined the celebrations for three straight years, training with his team for over a month to prepare. Their dedication reflects the festival's deep connection to community and heritage. The festival's timing aligns with the Twenty-Four Solar Terms, an ancient Chinese system dividing the sun's yearly path into 24 segments. Recognised by UNESCO in 2016, this knowledge shapes seasonal practices across China. At Qinhu Lake, the rippling waters carry both memories of the past and the lively spirit of the present.
The Qintong Boat Festival bridges history and modern life, turning remembrance into celebration. Through boat races, crafts, and communal effort, it keeps traditions alive while inspiring progress. The event remains a vivid expression of Jiangyan's cultural identity, year after year.
