Rare Pond Bat Discovered in Saxon Switzerland - Rare pond bat rediscovered in Saxony's Swiss National Park after years of mystery

A rare bat species, the pond bat, has been spotted again in Saxony's Swiss National Park. This endangered species was recently observed in its winter roost near Schmilka by researchers and volunteers involved in local volunteering efforts. The pond bat was first recorded in Saxon Switzerland in 2020 during a net-capture survey, and its high-frequency calls were detected in the same area last summer, proving its return. In early February, a conservation specialist and volunteers found the bat hibernating in a winter roost, suggesting the species may be more widespread than previously believed.

The national park and forestry administration, along with volunteers, have been working together for over 30 years to track bat wintering sites, contributing to the documentation of this elusive creature. Despite its rarity, the pond bat's repeated appearances in the national park provide valuable data for environmental conservation efforts. Researchers will continue monitoring the area to learn more about its habits and population size.
