Renault tightens 2035 climate goals with SBTi-approved emissions cuts
Renault Group has renewed its climate commitments with stricter emissions targets for 2035. The carmaker, which first adopted science-based goals in 2019, now aims to cut emissions from both operations and vehicle use. Its updated plans have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Renault was the first automaker to set science-based climate targets back in 2019. Now, it has strengthened these goals with new SBTi-approved reductions. By 2035, the company will slash emissions from its own operations (scopes 1 and 2) by 72% compared to 2019 levels.
The group is also targeting a 57% cut in emissions linked to vehicle production and use (scope 3) by the same year. This builds on a reference target of 40% for scope 3 reductions. To meet these goals, Renault plans to launch 16 new electric models by 2030. Beyond electrification, the company will improve battery energy density by 10% to 40% within the decade. It will also cut energy use per vehicle produced by 25% by 2030. Additionally, 30% of materials will come from the circular economy by that year. These measures align with Renault’s broader ambition to limit global warming to well below 2°C, with efforts to reach a 1.5°C trajectory.
Renault’s updated targets cover every stage of its operations, from manufacturing to vehicle use. The company’s focus on electrification, energy efficiency, and circular materials aims to deliver measurable emissions cuts. The SBTi’s approval confirms these goals meet the latest climate science standards.
