Russia's Volga Medical Center to Host Landmark Transplant Surgery Conference

The Volga District Medical Center (VDMC) in Nizhny Novgorod has long been a leader in transplant surgery. For over a decade, it has pioneered organ transplants in the region, starting with its first kidney and liver procedures in 2009. Now, the centre will host a major conference on advanced medical techniques later this month. The VDMC became a key transplant hub in 2009. In March that year, its surgeons carried out the region’s first successful kidney transplant. Two months later, they performed the first liver transplant in Nizhny Novgorod.

That same summer, the hospital’s Unit No. 1 opened the region’s first dedicated organ transplantation department. The centre also launched an Organ and Tissue Donation Center and introduced a postmortem donor programme. These steps helped establish the VDMC as a critical facility for transplantology under Russia’s Federal Medical-Biological Agency.

On May 21, the VDMC will host the High Technologies in Medicine conference. Leading surgeons from Germany, the U.S., Belarus, and Russia will attend, alongside researchers from Moscow and St. Petersburg. The event will focus on organ transplantation, with special attention to liver and pancreas surgery. Organ transplantation remains the only effective treatment for end-stage failure of vital organs like the liver, kidneys, and heart. The upcoming conference will bring together experts to discuss advancements in a field that saves thousands of lives each year. The VDMC’s role in developing these techniques continues to grow in importance.
