Counseling and Support Telephones Handle Over 60,000 Calls - Saxony-Anhalt sees record surge in crisis calls as residents seek anonymous phone support
Demand for crisis support in Saxony-Anhalt has surged, with over 60,000 calls made to helplines in 2024 alone. The state has expanded its services in response, offering anonymous, round-the-clock assistance to those in need. Many residents now prefer speaking to strangers over the phone rather than seeking help in person.
Last year, the three Telefonseelsorge centres in Saxony-Anhalt handled nearly 43,000 calls. These hotlines provide free, confidential support for issues like loneliness, family conflicts, and mental health struggles. Meanwhile, children and youth helplines in the state received over 15,700 calls, with young people often seeking advice on school pressures, friendships, and relationships.
The state has funded these services with nearly €370,000 in 2024. Since February 2022, Saxony-Anhalt has also run its own victim support hotline, addressing a growing need for immediate, anonymous help. Calls have grown longer and more emotionally intense, reflecting deeper distress among those reaching out.
Across Germany, three nationwide Telefonseelsorge numbers (0800 111 0 111, 0800 111 0 222, 116 123) operate 24/7, alongside the Nummer gegen Kummer (116 111) for young people. Each of Germany's 16 states, including Saxony-Anhalt, offers regional children's and youth emergency hotlines with similar anonymised support.
The rising number of calls highlights the importance of accessible mental health services in Saxony-Anhalt. With state funding and expanded hotlines, more residents can now receive immediate, confidential help. These services continue to adapt as demand for anonymous, round-the-clock support grows.
